Indexes play a large part in the server's ability to optimize SQL queries. Indexes affect the execution of SELECT, UPDATE, and DELETE statements. Indexes can be used for optimizing the WHERE clauses in these statements. In addition they can be used to optimize ORDER BY clauses in SELECT statements.
